The Human Rights Advocacy project addressed the abuse and violations of rights of women and children in two sub-counties; Bujumbura and Mugoye
and Bugoye and Muhokya sub-counties in the districts of Kalangala and Kasese respectively. The project target groups were duty bearers namely
police officers; Crime Investigators, local council leaders, prison officers, religious leaders, school administrators and student leaders in primary and post primary schools.
Advocacy workshops were conducted for influential leaders who are expected to advocate for policy change to promote
and protect the rights of vulnerable groups such as women, children and People with Disabilities (PWDs). The project aimed at creating an environment in which women and children’s rights are recognized, respected and protected while the specific objectives were to increase understanding and accessibility to laws and policies that promotes the rights of women and children in the project area; enhance the capacity of community\sub county district child and women protection committee to promote and protect the rights of women and children; build the capacity of law enforcement institutions (at two district levels and four sub counties) to manage women and children’s rights; and further strengthen RTY institutional capacity in project implementation
Overall goal:
To contribute to the creation of a society where women and children enjoy their lives free of human rights abuses and violations.
In the next two years, the project objectives will be
Objective 1: To increase understanding and accessibility to laws and policies that promotes the rights of women and children among 210 Councillors/technical staff, 40 teachers, and local technical staff.
Objective 2: To enhance the capacity of 60 district and 40 Sub county Child and Women Protection Committees to and 60 women leaders and 20 CSOs to promote human rights of children.
Objective 3: To build the capacity of law enforcement institutions (40 police and 40 prison warders) at two district levels and four sub counties) to manage women and children’s rights issues.
Objective 4: To further strengthen RTY institutional capacity in Project Implementation.
Some of the strategies the project will use to ensure that overall goal and objectives are achieved include
